Newark, DE 19716

I am a Midwestern transplant to the east coast coming to the History of American Civilization program at the University of Delaware with over ten years of experience in the Museum and Auction fields. I have a background in Art History as well as American and European History. My research focuses on the history and material culture of American dress asking significant and new questions about identity, religion, class, gender, race, consumption. Specifically, my scholarly work examines the creation of a so-called “American Style” in dress beginning in the late nineteenth century and how those beliefs are represented and understood today.

Ultimately, I hope my work reframes the understanding of “American Style” and prompts further inquiry and the creation of a broader definition of who, what, when and wear “American Style” was created and altered. Professionally, I’m inspired by faculty, both past, and present, who bridge the worlds of the academy and the museum. In the future, I envision working as a museum curator and teaching history, fashion history, or history of decorative arts as an adjunct or associate professor at a college or university.

Monmouth College, BA History, 2011; Smithsonian Institution & George Mason University, MA History of Decorative Arts, 2013

19th and 20th century material culture, dress history, design history, history of class, gender history, american religious and communal history, business history, history of capitalism, museum studies

Dr. Zara Anishanslin

GA Winterthur Registration-2018

TA Hist 254 / JWST 254 - History of the Jewish Holocaust - Spring 2018

TA Hist 102 - World History II - Fall 2017

EducationResearch InterestsAdvisorUD History Assignementscarleson@udel.eduCarleson, Nora EllenPh.D. Program, History of American CivilizationMuseum Studies Program
