History MA Alumna Simone Austin
BodyText1
A recent Philadelphia Inquirer article, "Etched in
Memory" written by TyLisa C. Johnson, focuses on the 1968 National
Guard occupation of Wilmington Delaware in the wake of Martin Luther King's
assassination. The article drew upon University of Delaware Alumna Simone
Austin's (M.A. History, 2017) graduate research. Her interest in the topic was
sparked while taking an Africana Studies class taught by the curator of
contemporary art at the Delaware Art Museum, Margaret Winslow. Students in the
class learned to use archival materials and newly discovered newspaper
photographs from 1968 to study the events of that year and their impact on the
city and its residents. While enrolled in the University of Delaware Museum Studies certificate program, Ms. Austin was offered a graduate fellowship at the Delaware
Art Museum where she served as the primary researcher for the community website
www.wilmington1968.org.
You can read more about the National Guard's occupation of Wilmington and
