Matthee publishes book on the history of alcohol in the Islamic world | Matthee publishes book on the history of alcohol in the Islamic world | ;matthee; | 4/21/2023 4:00:00 AM
Rudi Matthee, John and Dorothy Munroe Distinguished Professor of History, published Angels Tapping at the Wine-shop’s Door: A History of Alcohol in the Islamic World (Hurst/Oxford
University Press, 2023). Islam is the only major world religion that
resists the juggernaut of alcohol consumption. In many Islamic
countries, alcohol is banned; in others, it plays little role in social
life. Yet, Muslims throughout history did drink, often to excess ―
whether sultans and shahs in their palaces or commoners in taverns run
by Jews or Christians. This evocative study delves into drinking’s many
historic, literary and social manifestations in Islam, going beyond
references to ‘hypocrisy’ or the temptations of ‘forbidden fruit.’ This
book argues that alcohol, through its ‘absence’ as much as its presence,
takes us to the heart of Islam. Exploring the long history of this
faith ― from the eight-century Umayyad dynasty to Erdoğan’s Turkey, and
from Islamic Spain to modern Pakistan ― Matthee unearths a tradition of
diversity and multiplicity in which Muslims drank and found myriad
excuses to do so. They celebrated wine and used it as a poetic metaphor,
even viewing alcohol as a gift from God ― the key to unlocking eternal
truth. Drawing on a plethora of sources in multiple languages, this
study presents Islam not as an austere and uncompromising faith, but as a
set of beliefs and practices that embrace ambivalence, allowing for
ambiguity and even contradiction.

| | Uncropped Vertical | | GP0|#e59b718f-f2f3-4654-8986-5eea60d4f90b;L0|#0e59b718f-f2f3-4654-8986-5eea60d4f90b|Publications;GTSet|#0a3b6244-764a-4413-b2f1-4b4c15da868c | 2023.00000000000 | https://www.cas.udel.edu/Lists/ForTheRecord/DispForm.aspx?ID=302 | |

Poole heads online Renaissance resource | Poole heads online Renaissance resource | ;kpoole;mkray;monicadt;jyates; | 3/17/2023 4:00:00 AM
Kristen Poole, Ned B. Allen Professor of English, is the general editor of Routledge Resources Online - The Renaissance World currently
available to the public, with a full launch schedule for summer 2023.
Poole began working with Routledge in 2017 to create this large-scale
digital platform that includes essays on the global Renaissance from
scholars across the disciplinary spectrum, including UD faculty Meredith K. Ray, Elias Ahuja Professor of Italian; Mónica Domínguez Torres, professor of art history with a joint appointment in Latin American and Iberian studies; and Julian Yates,
H. Fletcher Brown Professor of English, among experts drawn from other
institutions. “‘Renaissance’ is itself a fraught term, as is the very
question of how, or even whether, to divide the past into discrete eras.
Our authors do not hold a monolithic notion of ‘Renaissance’ as a
clearly defined time or movement. This resource invites a fresh take on
the period by emphasizing its movement and intersection—the travel of
people, ideas and objects,” Poole says.
| | Uncropped Vertical | | GP0|#e59b718f-f2f3-4654-8986-5eea60d4f90b;L0|#0e59b718f-f2f3-4654-8986-5eea60d4f90b|Publications;GTSet|#0a3b6244-764a-4413-b2f1-4b4c15da868c | 2023.00000000000 | https://www.cas.udel.edu/Lists/ForTheRecord/DispForm.aspx?ID=293 | |

associate professor of history, is part of a research team based at
Vancouver Island University that was awarded more than $500,000 from
the Canadian Institutes on Health Research (CIHR) for a project examining the history of pelvic health and public health in Canada. The five-year project explores
how pelvic health issues, their associated treatments and shortcomings
in care became a public health concern in the late-1960’s and 2000, a
time when feminist activists brought attention to women's health. Virdi
joins with co-investigators to create 10-15 historical case studies of
underexplored pelvic health issues and partner with Indigenous
communities in British Columbia and Alberta, as well as local
communities. Virdi plans to work with local South Asian communities to
write a study on the history of endometriosis. Additional outcomes
include graphic history and film, digital archives and oral histories of
key figures in the feminist health movement and the experiences of
pelvic healthcare providers and service users. The project will provide
researchers and practitioners across the country with essential
historical context to inform contemporary health policy and efforts to
address inequities in women’s health. Only 20% of the proposals
submitted to the CIHR for awards in 2023 were funded.

| | Uncropped Vertical | | GP0|#6db99fdb-00c1-4351-83a6-46de89e19c2d;L0|#06db99fdb-00c1-4351-83a6-46de89e19c2d|Research;GTSet|#0a3b6244-764a-4413-b2f1-4b4c15da868c | 2023.00000000000 | https://www.cas.udel.edu/Lists/ForTheRecord/DispForm.aspx?ID=285 | |
