The Department of History held the annual History Honors banquet on May 8, 2019 in the Gallery of Perkins Student Center. History Interim Chair James Brophy presided over the ceremony and presented the awards to each honoree. Barbara O'Hara, Justin O'Hara, Dr. and Mrs. John Meakin, Carol
Phipps, and Social Studies Teacher of the Year, Katelyn Johnson were introduced as special guests for the evening.
The keynote speaker was Dr. Zara Anishanslin, Professor of History presented a short, but highly entertaining and informative talk entitled “Portrait of A Woman in Silk: Hidden Histories of the British Atlantic World.” Following Professor Anishanslin's talk, Professors Jim Brophy and Jonathan Russ gave special recognition to our History Activities Officers and Honors Degree Candidates.
- History Club Officers: President Justin Richards, Vice President Aaron Rubin
- Phi Alpha Theta Officers: President Olivia Mann, Vice President Gadson Lefft, and Treasurer Richard Langan
- Honors Degree w/Distinction: Christine Parola for her senior thesis entitled, “The Presidential Transition to John Adams and the Influence of Newspapers, 1796-1797.”
- Honors Degree Candidates – Sofia Curran-Munn, Amanda Langell, Olivia Mann, Jennifer West, and Elizabeth Fleisher

Alumni Undergraduate Awards in History were presented to outstanding history majors for excellence in academics
Senior History Major winners: Amanda Langell, Olivia Mann, and Sofia Curran-Munn
Junior History Major winners: Caleb Owens, Sarah Reynolds, and Aaron Tavasi
- Alumni
Undergraduate Non-U.S. Essay Award, presented to Caleb Owens for his
paper entitled “Class and Country in Orwell’s Social and Political
Thought.”
- Eve Clift Memorial Award is determined by departmental
faculty and presented to a graduating senior history major for
outstanding academic performance. This award is given in memory of
Professor Eve Clift, a historian of ancient Greece and Rome in our
department from1942 to 1975. This year’s winner is Olivia Mann.
- William
H. Williams Scholarship, for outstanding work in the field of American
History from 1607-1865: Meghan Mullennix.
- William H. Williams Award, for outstanding work in the field of American
History from 1607-1865: Dakota Edwards.
- William
E. Meakin Memorial Award, presented in memory of William E. Meakin, a
history major, nationally competitive bicycle racer, and American Cancer
Society Humanitarian of the year, to a history major who meets the
scholarship criteria of academic performance and has a distinguished
record of community service. This year’s winner is Mallory Coughlin.

Professor Kim presented the University of Delaware Social Studies Teacher of the Year Award to Ms. Katelyn Johnson, an outstanding teach from Gunning Bedford Middle School.

An award given each year honoring the memory of Ryan O'Hara to a History Education major who shows dedication to the
program, respected by other students and department faculty, and
shows overall commitment to UD education. This year Barbara O'Hara and Justin O'Hara presented the award to Deirdre
McCarrick.

- Bassett-Ferguson Fellowship, for dissertations on history of technology: Michel Forino and Gregory Hargreaves
- Caesar
Rodney Fellowship, from the General Society of Colonial Wars, for
students pursuing a doctoral degree in American Colonial History: Benjamin Tomak
- Jean B. Whyte Fellowship, for
scholarly research and writing on the topic of the impact of
Christianity or the Judeo-Christian ethic on American history, politics,
and/or policy: Camille Kaszubowski
