Raymond Callahan, professor emeritus of history and former director of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) program at the University of Delaware, has been selected to receive the 2019 Annual Faculty Award from the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs.

Callahan, who became the founding director of MALS in 1989, has continued to teach classes in the program since his retirement from the UD faculty after 38 years. During his time at the University, he also served as associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

In announcing Callahan’s selection, the national association said the award recognizes “the superb faculty throughout … member programs who teach and inspire students both within and outside the classroom.”

It will be presented at the association’s annual conference in October. Callahan held the John F. Morrison Chair of Military History at the U.S. Army's Command and General Staff College and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

An expert on military history, he is the author of six books. His most recent work, "Triumph at Imphal-Kohima: How the Indian Army Finally Stopped the Japanese Juggernaut," was named one of the five best new books in World War II history in 2017. He earned his doctoral and master's degrees from Harvard University and a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University.
