"Spinning the Wheels: Americans and the Environmental Costs of Transportation, 1945-2007"

This dissertation explores the discourse and policies around U.S. transportation and its environmental impacts. It seeks to uncover how Americans’ valuation of their mobility and infrastructure changed between the 1950s and 2000s. This study interconnects the histories of environmentalism, energy, regulation, trade, and climate change. Unlike other environmental histories, this project examines Americans’ relationships with not just one mode of transportation, like the automobile, but with all primary modes of moving people and goods.
